Toggle & Rocker Switch Technical Wiring Information

Section#1... Single Pole, Single Throw - SPST

This is the most common type of switch used.  It is the basic ON / OFF switch.  

Diagrams A & B show the standard switch in two terminal formats,  screws & tabs. 
Diagram C, D & E  show  " LT Series "  illuminated versions, independent & dependent light. 
Examples: cockpit light,  bilge blower,  windshield wiper, electric toilet or horn (momentary version)

Section#2... Single Pole, Double Throw ( SPDT)

This switch  has three positions  ON/OFF/ON,  allowing two circuits to be operated on & off.  However only one can be on at a time. 

Diagrams A & B show the standard switch in two terminal formats, screws & tabs.
Diagram C, D & E  show " LT Series " illuminated versions.
Examples: bilge pump (automatic and manual), fuel tanks (port and starboard), various gauges including fuel level, (port and starboard). 
These are also available in two position ON/ON with no center position  (Manual Bilge P/Auto Bilge P)

Section# 3... Double Pole, Double Throw - DPDT
This is a common type of switch & is typically the most complex type of generic dashboard switch.  It has what is equivalent to four ON / OFF switches.  It can be used to turn two loads on & off in different combinations or four loads on & off in pairs.  
Diagrams A & B show the standard switch in two layout versions.
Diagram C & D  show  two potential hookups for the  switch.
Diagram E shows " LT Series "  switch configured for "nav/off/anchor" with illumination.  
Diagram F shows copper strap jumpers configured for nav/off/anchor switch with illumination.  
These switches are used anywhere a two position, multiple combination, on off functions are required.  I.E. switching between two operating modes.  For example: running lights (anchor and navigation), electric winches (up and down), generating 24 volts from a 12 volt system, or where there is a desire to disconnect both the positive and negative connections to a device.  These are also available in a center off position where neither circuit is activated
